IDC’s research shows enterprises around the world are using multicloud strategies to optimize the performance of modern and existing legacy applications running on-premises, in public cloud services, and on legacy systems. In the early days of enterprise cloud adoption, many organizations focused their cloud strategies on enabling net-new cloud-native applications written to take advantage of dynamic cloud infrastructure and pay-as-you-go consumption-based cost models. Early success with these implementations is convincing more and more enterprises to expand their cloud footprint and to migrate existing applications to cloud in order to enhance end-user experiences, optimize cloud resource utilization and costs, and create a more flexible and agile business environment.

It’s the backbone of the modern enterprise, not just another function within it. For businesses to continue to succeed in an increasingly technology-dependent world, CIOs must assume a strategic leadership role and drive change throughout the enterprise. Driving business strategy is not an entirely new role, but it is an added responsibility to the traditional CIO job function. While many CIOs possess the skills and ambition to impact business strategy, existing IT operational models and an aging infrastructure are holding them back. CIOs who have been successful in bridging the divide between IT and the business did it by ?rst accelerating IT transformation.

IT departments and the organizations they serve can reap dramatic benefits by codifying and automating unique processes through the development of custom applications. These applications can lower costs, improve agility, quicken time to value, give IT greater control, and bolster productivity throughout IT and among enterprise users. In fact, with the right tools in place, organizations can enable a new class of “citizen developers” who work either in or with IT to create applications and services that are highly responsive to business needs. A platform to enable this type of innovation is not only available, cost efficient and simple to deploy, but it may already be part of your IT environment.

Your enterprise needs the ability to identify all duplicative or outmoded IT and business applications, services and other resources, and then to consolidate those worth keeping, migrate those worth updating, and retiring the rest. And that consolidation delivers multiple business benefits. Key among these: a single interface to multiple tools and resources, and more agile global operations. With the right practices, policies and technology platform, your enterprise can accomplish these goals in ways that accelerate growth, cut costs and complexities, and enhance competitiveness.

This paper covers some of the critical security gaps today’s mobile-cloud enterprises must address: • Unsecured devices. Unsecured devices allow users to easily access business data from mobile apps or cloud services simply by entering their credentials into an app or browser on the device. Once on the device, data can be easily compromised or shared with unauthorized, external sources. • Unmanaged apps. These typically include business apps, such as Office 365 productivity apps, that the user has downloaded from a personal app store instead of the enterprise app store. As a result, these apps are not under IT control but can still be used to access business content once the user enters his or her credentials. • Unsanctioned cloud services. Most enterprise cloud services have associated ecosystems of apps and services that integrate using APIs. While the enterprise cloud service might be sanctioned, apps and services from its ecosystem might not be.

This 10-point checklist outlines best practices for designing a security architecture that protects cloud data at the endpoint. Enterprise computing architectures have changed fundamentally in the last ten years, as employees consume an ever-growing collection of business cloud services through mobile apps. The traditional security approach of network perimeter and locked-down endpoints is not suitable for this app-to-cloud model of modern work.

Ready or not, the global mobility trend is forcing enterprises to enable a modern, mobile workforce with business productivity tools on any device, regardless of the underlying operating system. As enterprise users increasingly demand the ability to use their own mobile devices and desktops for modern work, IT is quickly impacted by end-user technology decisions. Enterprises can no longer ignore this reality, especially given the explosive global demand for mobile devices. Considering that smartphone adoption is expected to grow from 1.47 billion devices in 2016 to more than 1.7 billion in 2021, it’s clear that organizations need a comprehensive way to quickly onboard and secure a vast range of employee devices coming into the enterprise.

In the PC era, employees operated from within a well defined enterprise IT perimeter and passwords were sufficient to establish user trust. However, in today’s mobile-cloud environment, the enterprise perimeter has dissolved and business information is available to users on a variety of endpoints, apps, services, networks, locations. In this dynamic access environment, organizations need a different approach to security that is able to: • Establish user trust using multiple factor authentication • Correlate user trust with other factors such as endpoint, app, network, and more • Apply adaptive, risk-based policies that match the user’s environment

In recent years, the market for mobile and cloud technologies has completely shifted the behavior of enterprise users. People can now work anywhere, on any device, to access business apps and data from mobile apps and cloud services. Static, perimeter-based security can no longer keep up with all of the endpoints, users, apps, and data that travel far beyond the corporate firewall. Relying on old security approaches like password-only access control is no longer enough to secure this vast mobile-cloud infrastructure — especially since stolen user credentials were the top cause of data breaches in 2017.

Every corner of an enterprise needs technology to build new applications for their specific function or customer. IT needs to transform from its traditional function as the sole technology provider to become an adaptive, responsive and nimble organization that can keep up with the pace of the digital era as well as embrace the opportunities provided by a change-driven environment. This transformation can occur only if IT transforms itself into a strategic business enabler rather than a centralized technology function. Being an enabler means that IT has to decentralize and democratize application development and data access to the different Lines of Business (LoBs) and functional business partners. This way, IT can concentrate on a partnership with the business - i.e. providing a set of strategic and consistent assets and technology.

Today everything truly is connected to everything, and APIs are the connection mechanisms. Many companies are finding that their use of APIs has accelerated over the past 12 months, and that it will continue to accelerate during the next 12 months. APIs aren't really a new technology; they've actually been around for a long time. What is new is that they are in far broader usage today than they have been in the past. As of late 2015, the ProgrammableWeb API directory listed more than 14,000 APIs. When thinking about designing and managing APIs, a number of important questions arise. Why are APIs so well used and what effect would they have on your business? What is the impact of the expanding API economy on both providers and consumers? What are API tools and how can an investment in tools be an extremely cost efficient foundation for production grade API use cases?
