The US retail industry has had an interesting holiday season, marked by high expectations, volatility and distractions, and a reassuringly strong end. While it saw high sales growth - a 4 percent growth over last year, the best in some time - the results have not brought cheer all around. In many respects, the 2016 holiday sales data emphasizes the disruption patterns impacting the retail industry, and validates several predictions about the changing face of retail. Online and mobile sales continue to grow unabated, at 17 and 44 percent respectively, while in-store traffic saw the highest decline in two years. While none of this is surprising in itself, it helps to highlight the role omni-channel retail will play in the coming years.

For most retailers, the holidays are a frenzied rush of juggling multiple campaigns, meeting revenue goals, and hitting lofty numbers before the year is up. It’s far from a relaxing time of year. The holiday season has become critically important to online retailers. With the rise of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Green Monday, Super Saturday, and Boxing Day, the definition of “the holidays” has expanded substantially. While these retail days have helped distribute the holiday rush across a wider range, they’ve also made holiday campaign planning far more complex. Expanding digital channels, such as mobile and social media, have added to the immense opportunities that the holidays provide. Just last year, mobile accounted for 50.3% of all e-commerce traffic, surpassed desktop traffic for the first time ever. Knowing this, it shouldn’t be a surprise that 38% of shoppers now say they will not return to a retailer’s website if it’s not mobile optimized.

The 2013 holiday shopping season blew by at a record pace. With six fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas than 2012, Adobe Digital Index speculated that retailers may lose up to $1.5 billion in potential revenue if marketing programs failed to capture even greater daily sales than the Digital Index model predicted.
