As enterprises work to replicate the development agility of internet companies and innovate in highly competitive markets, application development has grown increasingly complex. The large, monolithic codebases that traditionally power enterprise applications make it difficult to quickly launch new services. Siloed and potentially distributed development and operations teams present organizational alignment problems. On top of this, users are more demanding than ever – enterprises need to scale effectively and monitor deployments to ensure customers are provided with high performance and a consistent experience. Of course, all this needs to be done while providing always-on service availability.

The complexity and high level of integration inherent in SAP environments can make development especially challenging and increase the time required to bring solutions to market. Persistent development and test challenges include unavailable systems, inability to accurately model performance and complex test data requirements. By employing service virtualization to model the core business logic in SAP systems and integrations, teams can free themselves of these constraints, leading to faster build and test cycles, better quality and lower cost.

How to overcome complexity and be ready for future growth. The modern production digital print market brought a world of opportunities for micro-runs and variable data printing into the hands of Print Service Providers (PSPs). With print available in any quantity to anyone, print is being democratized, resulting in ever-greater numbers of increasingly smaller jobs. The old print model of high-volume static print is being replaced with a myriad of micro-runs and micro-jobs. Automation that allows PSP owners to master the ensuing complexity and respond faster than ever before is enabling them to refocus on market development and on delivering value.

Effective Competition Depends on Continuous Delivery of Quality Software In today’s application economy every company is a software company, no matter what industry it is in: • Shipping companies depend on logistics software to efficiently route packages, arrange drivers and automate warehouses. • Retail companies rely on software to manage inventory, engage with customers online and to give in-store associates the tools they need to answer customer questions on the spot. • Marketing firms lean on applications to gather consumer data and parse it, automate communication with prospects and effectively manage advertising campaigns. The examples are endless. The point is that in order to compete today, every business must be able to quickly build and tweak software to adjust to always evolving market demands. Ultimately, business success depends on faster development iterations while still maintaining the high quality of service expected by customers, stakeholders and end users.

Speed and agility matter. Businesses are being disrupted every day by digital upstarts that find ways to address new market requirements before the more established companies can respond. Despite talented IT teams and years of head start in both architectural and development work, it is still difficult to respond to these challenges using traditional development patterns centered around monolithic software applications. It’s simply impossible to get to market quickly when applications need to be maintained, modified and scaled as a single entity by a large, heavily inter-dependent team. From this need has arisen the microservices paradigm: a set of patterns for software architecture, development, deployment and culture that focus on speed and agility. From small, independent services and teams to automated deployment to fault tolerance and resiliency, these patterns help accelerate time to market.

A major telecoms client was struggling with time to market. Keen to launch a new youth brand, it had a number of innovative value-added digital services it wanted to offer; but it was taking a long time to implement them. Launching a new brand meant a 12-15 month cycle, which was unacceptable. The reason was that, whenever anyone wanted to launch a new product or feature, they had to work on both the back-end and the front-end and then integrate it with the front end applications to make it work. This was so time-consuming and difficult that we were appointed to introduce a micro services layer in between, which would shorten development timescales.

Manufacturing companies have always prioritized nearness to supply and demand when developing their siting strategies. Now new imperatives such as proximity to emerging market demand, innovation, and talent development are rising to the fore. As a consequence, companies are moving past labor-cost arbitrage and operational efficiency to reinvent the manufacturing ecosystem. The name of this new approach? Next-shoring.

Build or buy? When manufacturers have sought new leaders, they have typically done both: grooming talent in-house and paying market rates for the best thinkers and managers. With the growing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) shortage, companies will be harder-pressed to buy – and keep – top technical talent. Emerging and established leaders will command premium prices and field continual offers, increasing the likelihood they’ll make frequent job changes, taking their industry and institutional knowledge with them. As a consequence, manufacturers will need to build their talent pipeline, empower knowledge workers with the tools and intelligence they need to succeed, and provide professional development opportunities that exceed what competitors offer. This will be a marathon, not a sprint. What’s key to making the race for talent successful: virtual training environments that accelerate learning and innovation.

Organizations may believe that simply building new applications to keep up with changing business needs is enough to offer new value to the market. However, between building new applications and maintaining legacy Java EE applications, organizations often end up supporting both traditional and new infrastructures with unchanged or even reduced IT budgets. As the pressure to increase their technical and business agility increases, IT organizations are being forced to re-examine their processes and infrastructure. The result? Architecturally rigid, monolithic middleware is being replaced with solutions that offer agility, flexibility, and rapid development and deployment, such as PaaS.

In today’s digital economy, the ability to bring new software applications and updates to market quickly is a key to competitive advantage. For companies in diverse industries, the goal is the same: Get high-quality software into production as fast as possible. In this quest to accelerate release cycles, organizations must get beyond historical barriers that impede the rapid delivery of the software that keeps an enterprise competitive. In too many cases, processes tend to be inefficient, slow, and prone to failed releases. Much of the blame for the problem can be laid at the feet of organizational structures that mandate conflicting goals for the two key departments at either end of the application development chain: development/testing (dev/test) and operations. Where dev/test teams want to push their applications and updates into production quickly, operations teams want to go more slowly in order to maintain control and keep applications and systems available.
