Social and business networking sites are changing the way people talk online. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Bebo help friends stay in touch while LinkedIn and Plaxo mainly connect business users. They are very popular but present new challenges to IT managers. They seem to have come out of nowhere. For example, Facebook currently has 70m users, 40% of which are located in the US.  The rapid growth of such sites is part of the problem. Companies risk being caught off guard.  Learn how to protect your business from threats posed by online social networking in this 7 Step Guide for IT Managers.

The Internet has proven to be a vital communications medium for worldwide commerce, but as an open and unprotected global network it can also present a wide range of threats that can cripple any business organization. Several years ago, most Internet threats were relatively benign examples of a young adolescent’s technical expertise but over time they have evolved into increasingly sophisticated domestic and foreign attacks that are designed to capture financial, personal, or strategic business information. Threats now come in the form of deliberately malicious acts, and exploitative opportunities for hackers and/or organized crime. The impact is serious, and the landscape of victims is getting broader every day. In response, no organization can afford to have its networks remain unprotected.

The problem with the vast majority of network and endpoint security solutions is that they operate on the premise of static whitelists and blacklists. These lists do not account for the changing nature of URLs, IPs, files and applications, nor for the volume of unknown threats permeating the web, meaning they cannot be used to provide adequate protection. Compounding this problem is that commercial network security technology, such as NGFWs and unified threat management systems, can easily flood the organization’s network security teams with too many alerts and false positives, making it impossible to understand and respond to new threats. As a result, not only do these threats evade the security technology and land with the victim’s infrastructure, but they also have plenty of time to steal sensitive data and inflict damage to the victim’s business. The final characteristic of the latest attacks is how quickly they compromise and exfiltrate data from the organization, compared to the

A New Security Model Worth Understanding—and Emulating Enterprise security traditionally relied on a fortress strategy that locked down user endpoints and created walls around the network. Today, this strategy cannot support or secure the use of mobile devices and SaaS capabilities, which exist outside the fortress. As a result, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) have been looking for new solutions that can secure these technologies today, and adapt as threats and business needs change. The credit card industry’s security model is one example that provides a new way to think about risk and contain it—that is, if you can see past the occasional bad rap it’s gotten from attacks and breaches.

Skills and resources — these are the two elements that make up an attacker’s arsenal. An attacker, however, cannot set out to break security or even perform sophisticated attacks without finding weak points in a system first. Massive malware attacks, email-borne heists, hacked devices, and disrupted services — all of these require a vulnerability in the network, whether in the form of technology or people, in order to be pulled off. Trend Micro has looked into the current and emerging threats, as well as the security approaches tailored for the landscape. Read on to find out how to make informed decisions with regard to the security focus areas that will figure prominently in 2018.

The evolution of cyber threats ad the cybercriminal community has evolved from the days of pranksters launching annoying viruses and spam that would be considered primitive today. While enterprises make concentrated efforts to protect their critical data, the lack of correlated and contextual network visibility can leave IT security organizations unable to prioritze the threats that matter the most.

Web Application Threats Are Evolving. Are Your Security Efforts Keeping Pace? Today, Web application security threats are not only becoming more abundant than ever, but also more difficult to detect, and more complex to solve. Many organizations are responding to these unique vulnerabilities with traditional network security approaches. However, sophisticated Web applications threats require a more sophisticated security strategy. What’s worked in the past won’t necessarily work today; and what’s more, Web application security requires a comprehensive solution, not simply a series of a la carte provisions. For detailed steps toward improving your Web application security strategy, download the VeriSign® Enterprise Security Services white paper, Best Practices That Improve Web Application Security.

Growing in number and becoming increasingly more malicious, security threats and attacks pose a severe threat to the survival of a business. Security operations teams need to leverage every available tool to respond more quickly and effectively to these incidents. While network packet capture and forensic analysis has traditionally been used by network operations, such a tool can also help security teams augment existing defenses and get on top of these threats. Given the hostile IT security environment, close collaboration between these groups is crucial to overall IT organizational success. This white paper explains the importance of packet capture and forensic analysis to security operations, examines the dynamics of this growing collaboration between security and network teams, and explores a leading platform in this market from Viavi Solutions.

The current era in cyber security is characterized by three fundamental challenges: the complexity of the enterprise network and connected infrastructure, the speed of newage attacks, and the strain of overwhelmed incident responders. In many ways, the expansion of networks and continual adoption of new technologies - from cloud services to the Internet of Things - has expanded the attack surface and introduced new entry-points through which attackers can gain a foothold. This, combined with the ready availability of exploit kits on the Dark Web, has led to the ‘vicious circle of the SOC’, where incident responders are so busy fire-fighting that they rarely have time to implement the critical patches that would prevent the problem at source. As security teams struggle to keep up with the rising volume of routine attacks, a new generation of cyberthreat has also emerged, characterized in large part by fast-moving threats that make an impact well before humans have time to respond. As organizations increasingly rely on cloud services and SaaS applications to streamline business practices, the familiar paradigm of the network perimeter has dissolved, leaving a porous and ever-changing digital estate in its wake. While the benefits of cloud computing will ensure that migrations continue apace, the unique security challenges presented by the cloud will not only require a more agile mindset, but also self-learning technologies that can move at the speed of cloud deployments and spot subtle deviations indicative of a threat, while providing complete, real-time visibility across the digital business. Darktrace’s world leadership in the field of artificial intelligence for cyber security makes it the most effective and proven solution to detect unprecedented threats and anomalous cyber-incidents in the cloud. Whether faced with an insider threat, an attacker targeting sensitive data in test containers, or a significant misconfiguration that could be exploited in the fut
