The Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) is an overarching philosophy for implementing better data centers. The most basic way to think about an SDDC is as a combination of virtualized computing resources, plus software-defined storage and networking. In addition, SDDC often includes overarching security aspects: in other words, SDDC abstracts and automates all the compute, storage and networking aspects that are traditionally physical, and it can put that automation and abstraction to use in enhancing security.

Data is changing the way organizations manage, consume, and deliver storage. Many legacy applications, however, are still in traditional storage silos, where data is tied to specific vendor storage and not easily configurable and monitored. EMC ViPR is the lightweight, software-only solution that centralizes, automates, and transforms storage into a simple, extensible and open platform.

Traditional methods for provisioning and maintaining storage resources are no longer sufficient to achieving business goals due to the fact that technology layers mask the relationship of application workloads to the physical storage devices that support them. The broad adoption of disruptive technologies - including cloud, virtualization, mobility, software-defined data centers, and big data - have introduced new and more challenging requirements for enterprise IT. Find our more in this whitepaper.

This white paper examines the economics of deploying Red Hat's Storage Server. Based on GlusterFS, a distributed file system that Red Hat acquired as part of Gluster, Red Hat Storage Server is ushering in a new era of software-based storage (also known as software-defined storage by many suppliers) solutions. Such solutions leverage commodity x86-based hardware from server vendors and a distributed shared nothing architecture that allows businesses to build out a service-based storage infrastructure in an economically feasible manner.

The Wide Area Network (WAN) is in the midst of a significant evolution. Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) is the key factor driving this evolution and bringing along with it many transformational changes. SD-WAN has enabled several new WAN uses cases, such as enabling reliable, secure and high performance support of software-as-a-service (SaaS), cloud compute, cloud storage, cloud security and the ability to use non-deterministic Internet services to provide business-class transport. The traditional WAN architecture was ill equipped to support these new use cases. As is usually the case with an emerging market, the first entrants into the SD-WAN space were start-ups. However, given the ability of SD-WAN to support both traditional and emerging WAN use cases, the market has recently been flooded with a range of vendors, solutions and technologies offering varying types of SD-WAN solutions. While having differing types of solutions provided by numerous suppliers is potentially beneficial, it

Changing business needs and the drive toward cost efficiencies and performance mean an end to reliance on traditional, proprietary storage approaches. Modern storage infrastructure enables CIOs to tackle some of their biggest pain points and put their data to work rather than viewing that data as a cost center. Driven by a desire to be flexible and “do more with less,” IT leaders are embracing things like software-defined storage, because it emphasizes freedom and openness.

Virtualization and cloud computing can help your organization achieve significant savings in data center hardware costs, operational expenditures, and energy demands— while achieving improvements in quality of service and business agility. However, as data centers continue to transition from physical to virtual and now increasingly, cloud environments, traditional security can slow down provisioning, become difficult to manage, and cause performance lag. As you scale your virtual environment and adopt software defined networking, evolving your approach to security can reduce time, effort, and impact on CPU, network, and storage. Read this white paper to learn more about virtualization and cloud computing.

Simply put, software defined storage is the abstraction of storage services from storage hardware. This term is more than just marketing hype, it’s the logical evolution of storage virtualization from simply being a storage aggregator to the end goal of storage as a service. To achieve this goal, software defined storage needs a platform from which to centralize.

Infrastructure matters. Today’s business environment is increasingly dominated by mobile and cloud-based platforms, and by the skyrocketing volume of new data. And with 70 percent of the average organization's IT budget being spent on operations and maintenance, infrastructure must be simplified, adaptive and responsive. Those are the characteristics of the software defined environment: IBM’s optimized, customized, virtualized IT platform designed to replace systems that assign server, storage and network resources manually. This eBook serves as an essential introduction to SDEs: what they are, and why your organization needs them now more than ever.

Enterprises are using applications to gain competitive advantage. Success in this technology-based environment requires agility and flexibility. And if IT wants to be the primary technology solution partner for the business, the IT staff needs processes and tools in place to deliver solutions at a much faster pace. As digital services propel more and more business processes, cloud technology is proving to be a crucial addition to the IT services portfolio. It is far more scalable, and in many cases more cost effective, than its predecessors. Cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and softwaredefined data center technologies—virtualized computing, networking, and storage—have helped IT address the “fast IT” challenge.

Storage is currently the most expensive and most complex piece in the data center and integral part of any Cloud service - be it public, private or hybrid cloud. Customers usually do not have enough information when buying storage solutions and are often deceived by sales tactics and marketing propaganda. Terms like "software-defined storage", "storage virtualization", "server SAN" and many more claim to be the cure for any storage problem.

A common misconception about hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is that because data services are software-defined, the hardware doesn’t matter. It’s easy to see why—the software driving HCI solutions such as the Dell EMC XC Series (in this case, Nutanix software) is exceptional. It efficiently manages data and communications across a cluster of nodes and storage tiers, keeping the cluster and virtual machines (VMs) up and running, delivering optimal performance and availability. Software-defined infrastructure is changing the way data services are delivered, making companies more efficient and agile, and reducing costs. The bank wanted to modernize its global data center core and edge networks to move to the next stage of its private cloud journey. The bank has long recognized the advantages of server virtualization, and it wanted to move more aggressively to a software-defined data center. The bank was virtualizing all services, including compute, storage, and network, to gain greater business flexibility and deliver cost savings. But first, it needed an elastic, flexible, and production ready network to connect its data centers. The bank wanted a dynamically scalable network to interconnect its data centers in Europe, Asia, and North America, so that it could move toward a fully automated, self provisioned cloud. The global network needed to deliver performance at scale for the company’s highly virtualized resources, while also supporting integration of legacy assets into its software-defined data centers.

It appears that agility and efficiency are coveted by basically everyone involved in protecting and managing data- especially those people struggling to simultaneously keep up with sprawl and meet ever-heightening expectations. One answer to these storage-related challenges centers on introducing a software-defined layer that abstracts and normalizes underlying storage repositories while still enabling already-deployed best of breed componentry to do what it does best.
