According to recent ESG research, 70% of IT respondents indicated they plan to invest in HCI over the next 24 months. IT planners are increasingly turning toward HyperConverged Infrastructure (HCI) solutions to simplify and speed up infrastructure deployments, ease day-to-day operational management, reduce costs, and increase IT speed and agility. HCI consists of a nodal-based architecture whereby all the required virtualized compute, storage, and networking assets are self-contained inside individual nodes. These nodes are, in effect, discrete virtualized computing resources “in a box.” However, they are typically grouped together to provide resiliency, high performance, and flexible resource pooling. And since HCI appliances can scale out to large configurations over time, these systems can provide businesses with investment protection and a simpler, more agile, and cost-effective way to deploy virtualized computing infrastructure. Enterprises of all sizes are undergoing massive data center modernization initiatives. They are looking to use technology to cut costs and drive competitive advantage. At the core of many of these transformations is an effort to reengineer IT delivery models to enable cloudlike flexibility of resources, and reduce both capital expenditures and operational overhead. That is giving rise to the private cloud movement. Indeed, private cloud adoption is accelerating and maturing. IT organizations are looking to the private cloud for the elasticity it can provide to add or remove resources as required. In fact, ESG research reveals that more than three-quarters of organizations would classify their private cloud deployment as either an advanced internal cloud or a basic internal cloud. Those organizations that have virtualized at least half of their production applications are more than twice as likely as their more physical infrastructure-dependent counterparts to categorize their environme

With the rise of cloud computing and mobile technologies the desire would be to have a LAMP stack that can be optimized for dynamic scale out as well as scale up virtualized infrastructures that can take advantage of the capabilities of the latest POWER8 architecture from IBM and its OpenPOWER partners. Building upon the collaboration gained with POWER8 and the OpenPOWER Foundation, IBM is uniquely positioned to deliver a more robust and high performing stack by working with key component providers while still allowing interchangeability of the components.

Over the last decade, converged infrastructure (CI) solutions have been used to implement virtualized infrastructure over a three-tier configuration that is packaged, sold and supported as a single entity. In place of three separate vendors supplying and supporting the three tiers, with CI, customers gain faster ordering, less problem-prone deployment and less administrator burden. Intel Inside®.
