While e-commerce remains a relatively small percentage of overall retail spending (rates vary by country, but are generally in the 5–10% range), it continues to grow. The ongoing growth of e-commerce suggests that one of the initial objections to online shopping—concerns about whether consumer personal information would be secure—has been largely overcome. Standards like PCI, and payment services like PayPal, along with a general increase in security awareness, have gone a long way to change the perception of online shopping. Learn more about Information Security in the E-commerce Sector.

How Snapper Further Protects Data in Amazon S3 Using CWP for Storage Abstract: Snapper, a New Zealand-based company that develops custom account-based solutions, was creating an online concessions payment program for local students and needed a way to enhance the security of their personal information on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The solution had to further protect online student profiles and associated payment details stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) against malware and threats. Snapper chose Symantec Cloud Workload Protection for Storage (CWP for Storage) for its advanced malware protection, elastic scalability, and simple deployment requiring only a few hours.

Convenience is absolutely critical to succeeding in e-commerce. Any glitches along the path to purchase potentially result in a lost sale. That's one reason we think Apple Pay's new mobile payment feature that uses a fingerprint is going to be a game changer. Its another step in reducing hurdles to online buying. You see it, you select it, you pay with your finger. What could be more convenient? Not interested in Apple Pay? Or unable to use it? At the very least, make sure customers that shop on multiple devices are recognized, no matter which device they log into. Giving them access to their stored information will make for a much smoother checkout.

Much has been written about Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) and its potential to herald a new era of open banking where banks no longer have a monopoly on payment services. Instead they will be forced to provide full access to customer accounts to third parties looking to provide financial services of their own, on top of banks’ existing data and infrastructure. All of this could prove to be true, just not on January 13th 2018, the deadline for national governments to transpose PSD2 into law. This is because there is still so much to be decided and clarified. The European Banking Authority’s longawaited regulatory technical standards (RTS) on strong customer authentication (SCA) were issued in March 2017 but missing some of the finer details, such as the methods to remotely access customer data and account information and the measures around the use of application programming interfaces (APIs) and screen-scraping.

Phoenix Children’s CISO, Daniel Shuler, and its IT security team are responsible for protecting 5,000 endpoints in the hospital and across more than 20 clinics in the region. Endpoints include physician and staff laptops and desktops, nursing stations, servers, Windows-based clinical devices, credit card payment processors, and point-of-sale terminals. These endpoints are used to store and/or process personal health information (PHI), and payment and credit card information. They must comply with HIPAA for PHI and voluntarily comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) for credit card data. The IT security team’s existing industry-leading AV solution claimed to provide visibility into malicious activity aimed at the endpoints. It continuously reported all endpoints were safe, sound, and secure. This caused Daniel to be suspicious. He knew from experience that such low levels of endpoint malicious activity was highly unlikely. Read the full case study to learn about the results Cylance was able to deliver.

The healthcare payer ecosystem in the United States has changed dramatically over the last decade and is expected to evolve at an even faster pace over the next few years. Many world-class companies involved in healthcare payment processing are finding themselves constrained by their existing information technology infrastructure. The silos that they built around business-to-business (B2B) processing are constraining them, making it difficult to achieve governmental mandates and (more importantly) increase processing efficiency and competitive advantage. Gone are the days of a small set of data following static and simple standards traded between a limited set of organizations. Gone are the days where the rules for when data is valid versus invalid can expressed in a paragraph or two. Gone are the days when information about a healthcare payment was almost entirely about the "who," "when," and "how much."

Banks today are continuously challenged to meet rigorous regulatory requirements. They must implement strict governance programs that enable them to comply with a wide variety of regulations stemming from the financial crisis that began in 2007, including the DoddFrank Act, Basel Committee on Banking Supervision regulations, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) and the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive To keep pace with regulatory changes, many banks will need to reapportion their budgets to support the development of new systems and processes. Regulators continually indicate that the banks must be able to provide, secure and deliver high-quality information that is consistent and mature.

This document describes how Likewise and Microsoft Active Directory can foster compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, a set of requirements for businesses that process payment card information. Developed by Visa, American Express, Discover Financial Services, and other members of the PCI Security Standards Council, the standard sets forth policies, procedures, and practices to protect customer account data. The standard includes specific requirements for strictly controlling access to customer data, authenticating business users, monitoring access, maintaining a secure network, and auditing system resources. Likewise integrates Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X workstations and servers into Active Directory, providing the basis to assign each user a unique ID for authentication, authorization, monitoring, and tracking. Likewise also provides group policies for non-Windows computers so that their security settings and other configurations can be centrally managed in the same way as Windows computers.
