As education evolves, so does the way we teach and learn. This report focuses on one of the newest trends, still in its nascent stages—mobile learning. It describes the potential benefits of mobile learning, addresses the challenges and opportunities that introducing mobile learning presents, and provides examples from school districts that have already implemented mobile learning programs so we can learn from their best practices. The report also suggests key points to consider as you develop your plans, align your goals, and make decisions regarding mobile learning in your schools.

This part of the CVD describes design considerations to implement a successful BYOD solution and different deployment models to address diverse business cases. Other parts of the CVD provide more details on how to implement unique use cases. There are numerous ways to enable a BYOD solution based on the unique business requirements of a specific organization. While some organizations may take a more open approach and rely on basic authentication, other organizations will prefer more secure ways to identify, authenticate, and authorize devices. A robust network infrastructure with the capabilities to manage and enforce these policies is critical to a successful BYOD deployment.

Higher education has come under increasing scrutiny as never before due to rising costs, changes in future job requirements, and new forms of learning opportunities offered by non-traditional companies and institutions. Students and parents are rightfully questioning the value of higher education based on perceived outcomes as well as staggering student loans that in some cases could take a lifetime to pay back. While the value equation debate rages on, there is another phenomenon taking place. It is nothing short of a revolution regarding the advances in technology and how institutions of higher learning along with nontraditional organizations are utilizing these powerful new tools. These new tools include new mobile devices, enhanced and feature-rich learning management systems, data-feeding sensors, 3D printers, smart classrooms, smart buildings, and collaboration tools allowing students and faculty to collaborate just about anywhere face-to-face, virtually.

Imagine you manage a warehouse for a small shipping firm. You have a simple job: route packages. But your employer expands to 25 western cities and 50 locations. After further expansion you now need to track packages coming by truck, rail, and plane and route them based on contents and weight to 10,000 different locations worldwide. While keeping traffic in and out tightly secured, making sure each package reaches its destination on time, and without going over budget. You might be wondering how things could get so complicated so quickly. But as an IT professional, you are nodding your head, because it all sounds very familiar. More Users + More Devices = More Complexity

The most significant IT transformation of this century is the rapid adoption of cloud-based applications. Most organizations are now dependent on a number of SaaS and IaaS platforms to deliver customer satisfaction and empower employee productivity. IT teams are responsible for delivering a high quality user experience for cloud applications while they struggle to manage a secure environment with advanced persistent threats. The WAN is the fabric to connect and control access between remote users and cloud-based applications. The WAN fabric needs to identify application type, location, apply prioritization and route traffic across the appropriate (multiple) WAN links to deliver on user experience. Different types of users/devices connecting to the cloud (via the Internet) means security policies must be enforced at branch, data center and in the cloud.

WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NO LONGER A PLACE WHERE YOU GO. It’s what you do — a dynamic activity that people expect to accomplish anywhere, anytime, on any device. Supporting today’s workforce requires a digital platform that empowers productivity and ensures security and management at scale everywhere: on site, on the road, or in the cloud. According to IDC, by 2020, mobile workers will account for 72 percent of the U.S. workforce. And they won’t be just checking email. These workers want to be productive 24/7. That means access to data, documents, and corporate apps anywhere, anytime, on any device. Enterprises, however, are struggling to allow more workers to use additional devices from a multitude of locations.

Unless you’ve achieved that digital data nirvana (and you haven’t told the rest of us), you’re going to have some unknowns in your world. In the world of security, unknown threats exist outside the enterprise in the form of malicious actors, state-sponsored attacks and malware that moves fast and destroys everything it touches. The unknown exists inside the enterprise in the form of insider threat from rogue employees or careless contractors – which was deemed by 24% of our survey respondents to pose the most serious risk to their organizations. The unknown exists in the form of new devices, new cloud applications, and new data. The unknown is what keeps CISOs, what keeps you, up at night – and we know because we asked you.

Attacks have many phases. Before launching, the attacker needs to stage internet infrastructure to support each phase. Two early phases are to redirect or link to a malicious web domain or send a malicious email attachment. For the former, most attacks leverage exploit kits (e.g. Angler) as the first stage before dropping the final payload. Cisco Umbrella effectively blocks initial exploit and phishing domains. Unlike appliances, our cloud security platform protects devices both on and off the corporate network. Unlike agents, the DNS layer protection extends to every device connected to the network — even IoT. Umbrella truly is the easiest and fastest layer of security to deploy everywhere. The cloud — at one point it was a revolution in the workplace. Now it is simply accepted as an efficient way to get business done. Most of today’s IT security was built to protect a well-defined network infrastructure, but that is yesterday’s architecture. When users and assets move outside the network perimeter where the traditional security stack can no longer protect them, your enterprise is exposed to an entirely new set of risks. And with more apps and sensitive data living in the cloud or on mobile devices, gaps emerge that leave organizations susceptible to attacks. Read this flipbook to see how you can take your security to new heights. We'll explain the challenges driving the shift in the market and how you can take advantage of these changes and improve security for your organization.

Today’s security appliances and agents must wait until malware reaches the perimeter or endpoint before they can detect or prevent it. OpenDNS arrests attacks earlier in the kill chain. Enforcing security at the DNS layer prevents a malicious IP connection from ever being established or a malicious file from ever being downloaded. This same DNS layer of network security can contain malware and any compromised system from exfiltrating data. Command & control (C2) callbacks to the attacker’s botnet infrastructure are blocked over any port or protocol. Unlike appliances, the cloud service protects devices both on and off the corporate network. Unlike agents, the DNS layer protects every device connected to the network — even IoT. It is the easiest and fastest layer of security to deploy everywhere.
